How Much Sunlight Are We Really Getting?

Project Green Bean reveals the impact of sunlight on human well-being through a living experiment. Research shows that despite Singapore's abundant sunshine, 40% of Singaporeans lack vitamin D. To explore this, we grew identical green bean plants under conditions that mirror our daily lifestyles.
For a week, we carried some plants everywhere in a portable terrarium necklace, while others were placed in optimal sunlight and in complete darkness. The plant receiving the most sunlight thrived, while the one exposed to our daily routines grew less. At the end of the experiment, we taxidermied the plants, analysed their colour using a P5.js colour detector, and visualised the data using P5.js and TouchDesigner—reinforcing a clear message: just like plants, we need more sunlight to truly thrive.
